The Department of Surgery at the Army College of Medical sciences comprises of 10 surgeons and 15 residents. The department boasts of a highly-skilled and passionate faculty responsible for providing surgical teaching to all medical students. The strength of the department lies in the breadth and depth of clinical expertise within the faculty members and a tireless dedication to a structured academic programme.

To introduce the young minds of the undergraduates to the subject and art of Surgery. To impart surgical knowledge of the highest standard in a stimulating environment of classrooms, bed-side clinics and practical exposure in the operation theatre. To train and motivate undergraduates to become outstanding surgeons with good academic ability and understanding of surgical skills and importance of team work.

Undergraduates are posted for internship training for a period of 02 months. In the training they are imparted bed side knowledge of pre and post op patient care and hands on training of basic surgical procedures under guidance eg suturing, incision and drainage, wound management and dressings. They are also trained to perform basic surgical procedures under strict asepsis in operation theatres.

Classified Specialist – Surgery, Trauma & Surgical Critical Care, Completed MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in 1996 and MS (Gen Surgery) from the same institute in 2005 followed by Post Doctoral Fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care from JPN Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi in 2014 and International Course in Trauma and Mass Casualty Scenario from Rambam Medical Centre, Haifa (Israel) in 2014. In addition, obtained Diplomat of National Board of Examinations (DNB) in Gen Surgery, Fellowship of American College of Surgeons (FACS); Fellowship of International College of Surgeons (FICS), Fellowship of International College of Laparoscopic Surgeons (FCLS) and Membership of National Academy of Medical Sciences (MNAMS) from National Board of Examinations from 2012 to 2014. Also an internationally certified ATLS (Advance Trauma Life Support) Course Director, AIIMS Ultrasound Trauma Life Support (AUTLS) Course Instructor, Faculty with ISTAC (Indian Society of Trauma and Acute Care), IHS (Indian Hernia Society) and SELSI (Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons if India). Presently, serving as Asst Prof (Gen Surg) with ACMS and Post Graduate teaching faculty for MS and DNB (Gen Surg). Has five publications in national journals and specific interest in Trauma care, Trauma Education, Trauma reconstruction and Injury prevention.

Lt Col MM Ram Shankar is an alumnus. of the prestigious AFMC ,Pune .He served in tough field locations like siachen ,Leh as a young medical officer . In 1999 he was selected for PG in surgery at Command Hospital (Airforce) Bangalore .After successfully finishing MS in March 2003 ,he served at various Military Hospitals at Bhopal ,Leh ,Shillong ,Jabalpur ,and Wellington . He was also part of the team of doctors on deputation to Indian Medical Mission at Kabul ,Afghanistan in 2004.Presently he is posted at BH(DC) since 23Aug 2015.

Col (Dr) S. Santosh Kumar, Senior Adviser (Surgery & GI Surgery) & Assoc Prof (Surgery) has done his MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune and earned the degree from Pune University in 1991 & has since been serving in the Army Medical Corps and has held various appointments. He has done MS (Surg) from the same medical college and earned the degree from Pune University in 1999. He has also undergone two years training in Surgical Gastroenterology from GB Pant Hospital, Delhi. He has been a UG & PG teacher and guide. He has also been examiner with MUHS, Nasik. His special area of interest is Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery.
