The Department of Surgery at the Army College of Medical sciences comprises of 10 surgeons and 15 residents. The department boasts of a highly-skilled and passionate faculty responsible for providing surgical teaching to all medical students. The strength of the department lies in the breadth and depth of clinical expertise within the faculty members and a tireless dedication to a structured academic programme.

To introduce the young minds of the undergraduates to the subject and art of Surgery. To impart surgical knowledge of the highest standard in a stimulating environment of classrooms, bed-side clinics and practical exposure in the operation theatre. To train and motivate undergraduates to become outstanding surgeons with good academic ability and understanding of surgical skills and importance of team work.

Undergraduates are posted for internship training for a period of 02 months. In the training they are imparted bed side knowledge of pre and post op patient care and hands on training of basic surgical procedures under guidance eg suturing, incision and drainage, wound management and dressings. They are also trained to perform basic surgical procedures under strict asepsis in operation theatres.

Lt Col (Dr) M M Ram Shankar (Retd) is an alumnus of prestigious AFMC, Pune passed out in 1993. He held various important postings in military hospitals as a general duty medical officer since then. He did his MS in general surgery in 2003 from Command Hospital(AF) Bangalore and Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery from World Laparoscopy Hospital, Delhi. He managed singlehandedly many peripheral military hospitals as a general and laparoscopic surgeon till his premature retirement in Apr 2018. Because of his passion for teaching he has joined after retirement as Associate Professor in ACMS, New Delhi.
